Background of the study:
Obesity has emerged as a growing public health concern in many parts of Nigeria, including Ibadan South West Local Government, Oyo State. Local perceptions of obesity are shaped by cultural norms, socioeconomic status, and evolving lifestyles. In some communities, a larger body size is traditionally associated with prosperity and health, while in others, it is increasingly recognized as a risk factor for chronic diseases (Akinyemi, 2023; Adewale, 2024). These diverse perceptions impact dietary habits, physical activity, and overall health behaviors. The interplay between cultural ideals and modern health messages creates challenges in addressing obesity and its related health complications, such as diabetes and cardiovascular diseases (Oluwaseun, 2025). Recent research underscores the need for culturally tailored public health interventions that acknowledge these perceptions while promoting healthy lifestyles. This study aims to evaluate local perceptions of obesity, investigate their implications for health, and explore strategies for effective obesity management in the community (Folarin, 2023).
Statement of the problem:
In Ibadan South West, conflicting perceptions of obesity have led to challenges in promoting healthy lifestyle behaviors. Cultural acceptance of larger body sizes may undermine public health efforts aimed at reducing obesity-related risks. Misconceptions regarding the health implications of obesity contribute to poor dietary practices and sedentary lifestyles, exacerbating the prevalence of non-communicable diseases (Adebola, 2024). Limited community awareness and culturally insensitive health interventions further complicate efforts to combat obesity.
Objectives of the study:
To assess local perceptions of obesity in Ibadan South West.
To determine the relationship between these perceptions and health outcomes.
To recommend culturally appropriate interventions for obesity management.
Research questions:
What are the prevailing perceptions of obesity in the community?
How do these perceptions influence health behaviors and outcomes?
What strategies can effectively address obesity in a culturally sensitive manner?
Research Hypotheses:
Positive cultural perceptions of larger body sizes contribute to higher obesity rates.
There is a significant relationship between obesity perceptions and non-communicable disease prevalence.
Culturally tailored interventions can improve obesity management outcomes.
Significance of the study:
This study is significant as it illuminates how cultural perceptions shape health behaviors related to obesity. The findings can guide the development of targeted, culturally sensitive interventions to reduce obesity and its associated health risks in Ibadan South West (Ogunyemi, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study:
The study is limited to evaluating local perceptions of obesity and its health implications in Ibadan South West Local Government, focusing on cultural beliefs and lifestyle factors.
Definitions of terms:
Obesity: A condition characterized by excessive body fat that may impair health.
Non-communicable diseases: Chronic diseases not passed from person to person, such as diabetes and heart disease.
Culturally tailored interventions: Health strategies designed to align with the cultural beliefs and practices of a community.
